Our Lady of Los Ángeles in Costa Rica

Our Lady of Los Ángeles, or La Virgen de los Ángeles, is the patron saint of Costa Rica, and her feast day is celebrated annually on August 2nd. Known affectionately as La Negrita, the revered statue of the Virgin Mary is housed in the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles in Cartago. Every year, over a million pilgrims make their way to this site for a pilgrimage known as the "Romería," walking from various parts of the country to the basilica. Many pilgrims undertake this journey as a gesture of gratitude or in search of blessings and healing. Upon reaching the basilica, they offer prayers and light candles at the sacred site, creating an atmosphere of deep devotion and unity.

During the pilgrimage and subsequent celebrations, Cartago transforms into a hub of activity. The faithful attend special masses, participate in processions, and offer flowers and other gifts to La Negrita. The basilica and surrounding areas are adorned with decorations, and vendors sell religious memorabilia. Medical services and hydration stations are also set up along the pilgrimage route to support the pilgrims. The event is not only a religious observance but also a demonstration of Costa Rican cultural identity, with La Negrita symbolizing protection, compassion, and unity for all Costa Ricans.
